Chaos, Distilled to Complexity

“Complexity connects me to nature. It’s almost like I’m not looking for simplicity, as that element doesn’t answer questions in my mind.”

A few months ago I was asked by Jennifer Renwick and David Kingham to contribute to the Field Studies Section in Issue 12 of Nature Vision Magazine. This issue was set to explore the inner landscape. The unseen way our emotions, memories, and experiences shape the photographs we create. All notions that I think about regularly and that play a large part in my photography.

This issue brings together essays, portfolios, and conversations about the quiet ways our emotions, memories, and experiences shape the photographs we create. It is a truly fascinating dive into the minds of some fantastic photographers.

Opening spread from my Article 'Chaos, Reduced to Complexity' in Issue 12 of Nature Vision Magazine

I’m very pleased to share that my Field Studies piece, ‘Chaos, Distilled to Complexity’, is included in the magazine. My essay reflects on the relationship between a restless, layered mind and the complex natural scenes I’m drawn to photograph. Rather than seeking simplicity, I explore how patterns, movement, geometry, and visual complexity can create a sense of connection, order, and meaning.
